1 millimetre
In the summer of 2015, Greece stood on the edge of economic collapse and a possible exit from the euro. What appeared publicly as a dramatic standoff between a defiant left-wing government and uncompromising European creditors was, in reality, a far more fragile, improvised, process – one shaped by miscalculations, clashing personalities, and secret contingency plans that would have permanently altered the European project.
1 millimetre is a 6-part series reconstructing the critical months that brought Greece to the brink of bankruptcy, as seen throught the eyes of the crisis’ main protagonists. It reveals how a newly elected government, carried to power by popular anger against austerity, entered negotiations convinced it could force Europe to change course, and instead became dangerously close to triggering a systemic crisis.
More than a chronicle of financial negotiations, 1 millimetre is an intimate account of Europe’s most perilous moment since the creation of the euro. It explores what democracy means when economic survival is at stake, and whether ideology can withstand contact with institutional power and economic reality.
